Volunteer Scientist-in-the-Classroom Partnerships
Realizing the importance of giving back to the community, STEM graduate students, Ph.D. candidates, and postdoctoral fellows at Vanderbilt University, Meharry Medical College, and Tennessee State University and Fisk University organized to promote science education in Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools.
The Volunteer Scientist-in-the-Classroom Partnership (VSCP) Program promotes partnerships between middle school science teachers and scientist by partnering teachers with scientists who spend a minimum of two hours per month in the classroom assisting with hands-on science activities.
Vision
To enhance the quality of science education in the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools through interactions with graduate level scientists from neighboring institutions of higher education. Volunteer scientists will:
- establish relationships with science students and teachers in Metropolitan Nashville Public School;
- expose students to interactive science and learning while simultaneously enhancing their critical thinking and analytical skills; and
- serve as a mentor and advocate for science education to students.
