Volunteer Scientist-in-the-Classroom Partnerships

VSCP 2008 Participants

Realizing the importance of giving back to the community, graduate students, Ph.D. candidates, and postdoctoral fellows at Vanderbilt University, Meharry Medical College, and Tennessee State University sought a way to promote science education in Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools.

With much interest in the Scientist-in-the-Classroom Partnership Program from the scientific community, but unable to dedicate one day per week to working in schools, scientists wanted to make a lasting contribution on a smaller scale. As a result, the Volunteer Scientist-in-the-Classroom Partnership Program was created.

Vision

To enhance the quality of science education in the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools through interactions with graduate level scientists from neighboring institutions of higher education. Volunteer scientists will:

  • establish relationships with science students and teachers in Metropolitan Nashville Public School;
  • expose students to interactive science and learning while simultaneously enhancing their critical thinking and analytical skills; and
  • serve as a mentor and advocate for science education to students.
