Principal Investigator Dr. Virginia Shepherd, Director of the Vanderbilt Center for Science Outreach and Professor of Pathology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine established the Scientist-in-the-Classroom Partnership Program. In addition, Dr. Maria Lima, Dean of the Medical School at Meharry Medical College and Dr. Todd Gary, Professor of Biology and an astrobiologist at the Center of Excellence at Tennessee State University, add depth and dimension to the program through their collaboration and sponsorship of graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. Under the leadership of Bryan Kent Wallace, Director of Physics, Fisk University has recently joined The Scientist-in-the-Classroom Partnership Program.
Jeannie Tuschl, previously an NSF GK-12 Program teacher, continues to coordinate the Scientist-in-the-Classroom Partnership Program. Ms. Tuschl has 25 years of classroom experience teaching grades 4-8. She formerly worked with various local NSF projects providing teacher training in science instruction. She is the recipient of many awards including the 2003 Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools Middle School Teacher of the Year and Tennessee Science Teachers Association Innovative Science Teacher of the Year. Previously, Ms. Tuschl wrote and produced the fourth grade science series, Changes All Around, for the Nashville PBS affiliate television station.
Middle school principals welcome the STFs to the faculty with enthusiasm and the confidence that the program will offer students opportunities to participate in hands-on science activities and to interact with science professionals. Principals Bob Blankenship at Haynes Health/Medical Design Center, Ganet Johnson at Margaret Allen Middle, and Karen Lefkovitz at Henry Oliver Middle contribute their expert leadership and insight, and offer crucial support to the Scientist-in-the-Classroom Partnership Program. In addition, principals who are witnessing the impact of the SCP for the first time include Kimber Halliburton at Bellevue Middle School, Fran Stewart at East Literature Magnet, Dr. Angela Carr at Head Math and Science Magnet, Jud Haynie at H.G. Hill, Dr. Tonya Hutchinson at Litton Middle, and Antoinette Love Williams at Neely’s Bend Middle.
